Event Description

Scout Brigade of Fort George 2010 CrestThe Scout Brigade of Fort George is an annual International Scout jamboree held the third full weekend of September. Located on the grounds of historic Fort George, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario Canada. This is a living history camp focusing on the history of the War of 1812 and the formation of the Niagara Frontier.

Cub Scouts, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers from all over Ontario, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York States and more are welcome to attend!

Since 1984, we have has over 1000 youth registered each year. In 2012, the 100th anniversary of the War of 1812 over 3,035 youth and leaders participated. We are sponsored by the Greater Toronto Council of Scouts Canada.

The Junior Brigade (Cub Scouts) do hands-on activities such as games, crafts, candy making, lantern making, naval boat battles and cub-style fort building. The Cub Scouts have a fun busy weekend camping in the same field as the older youth so they can see what the ‘big kids’ are doing too. A great linking event for all 3 sections!

The Infantry (Scouts) and Artillery (Venturers) Regiments, dress as militia or 1812 soldiers have a fun program which culminates in a battle which is the largest cap gun/capture the flag battle in the world on the grounds of Fort George. Throughout the weekend, we learn about the historic grounds we camp on and how the Canadian and US were changed by the War of 1812.

The Venturers run their own Artillery Regiment. They maneuver close-to-scale cannons in artillery soldier uniforms in the battles. Aside from their own program, Venturers have the option of taking on leadership roles in the Cub Scout and Scout programs. The Venturers and Rovers can volunteer for site services and the vocational programs, Medical Venturers and Police Rovers, which provide invaluable service to our camp each year.

The Brigade is comprised of 6 Regiments:

  • 6th US Regiment
  • King’s 8th Regiment
  • 49th Regiment of Foot
  • Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Fencible Infantry (RNR)
  • Artillery (shared British/American)
  • Canadian Fencibles / West Point Academy (Cub Scouts aka the Junior Brigade)

Each Regiment (sub-camp) has their own Headquarters (HQ) on the field. Each regiment has several Companies and Camp Sites that are placed on either side of the HQ. Once registered your group will be assigned to an existing Company and will share a camp site with other returning groups. We eat within our companies to get to know one another. The groups within a Regiment camp together and do activities together to further the international brotherhood of scouting.

Of course we can’t forget one of the highlights of camp, the parade! All members of camp march on parade through Niagara-on-the-Lake with the Mayor, the town and parents watching. All the youth love being the centre of attention in this annual unique event!

The Saturday evening is a time for fun free time in the camp field with many activities provided by the regiments. A movie, crafts, badge trading are just a few of the annual activities.

This is a very busy, active weekend for all at camp. Registration will open in the Spring of 2018, stay tuned.
