Youth Awards Catch-Up Program
My name is Nathan Yiu and I have the pleasure of serving as your Deputy Council Youth Commissioner for Recognition 2016-2017. This year is an exciting one for recognition, as we are rolling out the new Canadian Path top section awards, which we hope will allow more youth to be recognized for their personal progress and achievement.
Given these changes, the Council Key 4 and I have decided to adopt a one-time catch-up program in the name of fairness and equity to all. Specifically, we hope to help youth that have moved up to older sections be properly rewarded for their efforts during their time in younger sections, according to the new Canadian Path top section award standards. This catch-up program will affect three sections: Beavers, Cubs, and Rovers, and allow for the submission of top section awards for youth that have moved on for up to but not more than two years. Hence, any Beavers, Cubs, and Rovers that have completed award requirements during the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 scouting year can qualify to earn the award.
However, it will be up to specific Contact Section Scouters and Group Committees to decide if they would like to participate in this program. As well, if there are Potential Chief Scout and Queens Venturer candidates who have completed most of the requirements in the old system, we will allow submissions of awards according to old standards. Once again, this decision will be up to Group Commissioners along with Group Scouters. Please be advised that this catch-up program period will end by the end of the 2016-2017 Scouting year, which is August 31st, 2017.
We also realize that there will need to be new forms posted to the GTC website for the new section awards, but ask all groups to be patient as we wait to receive them from national. The latest update we have been given is that all new award forms and certificates will available in the winter. Therefore, we ask that you keep track of any youth you would like to recognize at this time, and submit forms accordingly once they become available.
Regarding recognition more generally, we also encourage all Scouters to nominate deserving youth for the Order of the Silver Key and the Medal of the Maple awards. As a quick reminder, the Order of the Silver Key is awarded for youth that have done service at the Group or Area level, while the Medal of Maple is awarded for “significantly contributing to the Movement and the spirit of Scouting,” primarily at the Council, National, and International levels.
